Opening Context
Expecting and postpartum patients frequently experience mental health challenges, yet healthcare providers often face obstacles when responding. The core issue identified was that “many perinatal women in Kentucky face barriers to accessing psychiatric care because of limited awareness, stigma, and a lack of clear, centralized resources.”
KyCOMPASS (Kentucky Consultation & Outreach for Maternal Psychiatry and Support Services) addresses this gap by connecting healthcare professionals with psychiatric expertise and educational support across the state.
Who KyCOMPASS Is For
The platform exclusively serves Kentucky healthcare providers supporting pregnant and postpartum individuals experiencing mental health or substance use concerns, including:
- OB/GYNs
- Family medicine physicians
- Pediatricians
- Nurse practitioners and physician assistants
- Nurses, midwives, and doulas
- Social workers and care managers
These professionals often represent the first point of contact for struggling patients but frequently lack access to psychiatric specialists, particularly in rural or resource-limited settings.
Technical Architecture
Rather than building a conventional website, APAX Software implemented a decoupled architecture combining Drupal on the backend with Next.js frontend technology styled using Tailwind CSS. This approach provides the KyCOMPASS team with robust content management capabilities while granting designers and developers greater flexibility in shaping the user experience.
The separation allows content maintainability without requiring developer intervention for routine updates like new training modules or resource additions.
Provider Impact
Early feedback demonstrated strong reception among healthcare professionals:
- One OB/GYN noted that real-time consultation access would significantly benefit complex cases
- A perinatal mental health specialist expressed enthusiasm about highlighting maternal mental health across the state
The platform consolidates near real-time psychiatric consultation, clinic-specific training, provider resources, and educational opportunities into a single accessible entry point.
Future Development
KyCOMPASS anticipates ongoing expansion, including additional training content, expanded resource libraries, and increased peer networking capabilities. The technical foundation supports sustainable growth without fundamental redesign or restructuring requirements.
